9/3/2010     ANTI-AGING!

ARTICLE 269

Being in a culture where tan skin, and tiny little waists are of value, we rarely think about how having these things will impact us in the future.

We all know tanning and overexposing our skin will damage our skin in the long run, but the thing with our society, is that we don’t focus on anything but the here and the now. What makes you look young, fresh, and chic now, will just make you look older than you really are later on.

And for those where your case is a bit too late for prevention, what is out on the market that can help you reduce those lines, and extra baggage?

Well first off, make sure antioxidants are a key to your diet. Antioxidants help replenish and rejuvenate damaged cells which does include skin cells!

Anything with CoQ10 and DHEA are also key. Many of anti-aging products out there advertise that they contain these elements because they help with anti aging by fighting off free radicals and oxidation. Your skin is constantly exposed, to help replenish that your skin needs to keep producing more and more healthy cells.

One of our most popular items has been Now Foods CoQ10 Serum, which helps tighten the skin and reduces wrinkles.

Feel free to check out more of our anti aging products!

Or if you have a specific skin type, email asktheauthor@nokomisnutrition.com to get some more recommendations!

9/3/2010     Truth About Toning!

ARTICLE 268

If you had a dollar for every time you said the phrase “I really need to get toned” how rich would you be? Myself? I would be at least a couple hundred dollars richer.

Truth is, I’ve never been able to stick to my goal, and finally I questioned myself, “Why can’t I just keep at it?” If any of you readers are like me, we need to be instantly gratified, show us those instant results! (Pfft, yeah wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just snap our fingers and have beautifully defined abs, arms, and legs?)

Here are some things to avoid. While you’re sitting there using light weights and pushing yourself to the max in repetitions, keep in mind this is a myth.

While you’re busy avoiding that, educate yourself on toning. “What is toning?” “Tone” is a word that describes your muscles when they are in a state of partial contraction, which allows them to be prepared for action. Meaning, that it doesn’t matter how many times you lift, it’s how much weight you lift. How much are you really working your muscles to build them up. (Building muscle, and toning are the EXACT same thing!) Keep in mind ladies, you don’t have to “bulk up.” Just push yourself until you reach your goal, and from their stop pushing yourself, just maintain them.

If your goal is to see your muscles, your goal is to lose body fat, whether you’re a man or woman, the answer lies in the weights. Same exercises, and same reps, it’s the weights and cardio you want to target to lose your body fat.

But with starting a new exercise, remember to always do your homework, and research your supplements!

Stay tuned everyone, and if you have any questions, ideas, or topics you want to hear about, write in to asktheauthor@nokomisnutrition.com!

8/30/2010     Say Good Bye to Dry Skin!

ARTICLE 267!

Now, personally, I suffer from severe eczema, and it unfortunately runs in the family. During one of my breakouts I came across a product by Puremedy, which is all natural and works absolutely wonderful. It calms the itch and moisturizes your dry skin!

I actually used the baby skin formula in hopes of curing diaper rash for my son (which also works wonders) but desperately needed something without alcohol to help moisturize my skin. It’s funny how as soon as we have dry skin, we turn to top branded lotions, but what we never notice is that these top branded lotions probably contain a significant amount of alcohol or other ingredients that actually dry out your skin even more!

Puremedy formulas are an odd texture, not as thick as Vaseline, but have the same appearance and come off extremely similar.

Puremedy’s formulas are made with all organic ingredients such as beeswax, olive oil, vitamin e oil, resin, and many more. The best part of their product line is that they offer products that target many different skin types. So whether you have oily skin, dry skin, acne problems, or other skin issues, Puremedy is a wonderful route to choose.

They also have formulas to target any kind skin infections, whether you have a scraped knee, to other sores, their formulas are a great alternative. Rather than using something that has alcohol, and many other chemical substances in it that will probably burn and make your sore sting, you could use something all natural and calming.

For more questions, comments or concerns, on Puremedy’s formulas feel free to contact our customer service.

8/16/2010     Quick Tips to a Flat Tummy

We’re all a little self conscious, but just like our decisions can impact us, our reaction to our issues can as well. If you think you need to tone up a bit, (especially around the mid-section area) follow these basic, simple rules to start your journey towards a flat tummy.

1. Stop with the junk food already. Sure it may taste good, but it’s definitely not helping you reach your goals. Keep in mind, you are what you eat.

2. Knowing your good carbs and your bad carbs. Carbs that refined and make up foods such as pastas, bread, rice, etc are not so good. The carbs that come from natural whole fruits and vegetables, however are going to help support your weight loss.

3. Control your cravings, especially midnight cravings. After your little rendezvous with ice cream, your body isn’t really up to do much more than sleep. Since your body is no where near as active as if you were well-rested, all of that sugar from Mr. Ice Cream gets turned into fat!

4. If you’re a drinker, do something good and just stop. Alcohol is a bit hit especially around your waistline. Moderation is key.

5. Exercise and cardio. To keep your metabolism up and running, do some daily activity. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, run to the bus stop, etc. Little things of activity like this will give your body that extra UMPH that it needs to keep your metabolism up and firing away.

A lot of these are just bad habits. If you can kick these bad habits, you’ll be golden. It’s not as hard as you think though, fruits and vegetables can be good! If you’re craving something sweet, instead of reaching for that brownie, go for something like our Chocolate Greens, which is all natural and only 40 calories per 8 oz! Here’s another plus, while it may take you 3-4 brownies that are probably 200 calories plus each to fill you, this 8 oz. glass will most likely do the trick. If you have a blender, throw in a banana and some peanut butter, and some protein!

8/16/2010     Your Number 1 Cure!

As we know, the best cure for just about anything out there would be prevention. There are some areas where this may be excluded. But for the most part, we can prevent illness, obesity, fatigue, stress levels, etc.

It’s your decisions that impact the future of yourself and your loved ones. To create a more positive, and healthy future without obesity there are simple steps to take.

Our number one mistake is looking at nutrition facts rather than the ingredients list. It matters where the calories, sodium etc. come from. Not really how much. If you’re going to eat whole fruits and vegetables the entire day, the caloric intake from that is much better for you, verse eating a small caloric intake meal that has been processed and chemically altered. For example Twinkies are known to be extremely bad for you, but a lot of the ingredients in Twinkies are in foods that you may think are good for you; Progresso Soup being one. Understand the ingredients, and know how to decipher the good from the bad.

Be aware of food processes as well. Front headings may be misleading, why; to sell you the product. It’s all about marketing.

“Freshly Baked Bread” may not really mean it’s all that it’s cracked up to be. Just because it is fresh out of the oven, it doesn’t mean that it’s fresh. Who knows, the dough could’ve been sitting in a tub all night with preservatives, hydrogenated oils and other miscellaneous stuff. Or just because a juice carton advertises that it has 20% more Vitamin C, doesn’t mean it’s good for you-look at the sugar content, and look at where the sugar probably comes from. Taking these extra 2 steps while you’re in the grocery store won’t hurt you. Plus when you’re doing some grocery shopping, you never plan to be in and out anyways. There are many more ways you can help prevent obesity and other life-long impacts.

8/16/2010     EAT THIS, NOT THAT!

As you’ve noticed, the past couple of articles have been really targeting the upcoming seasonal changes. We target this for good reason though. Spring and Summer are all about relaxing, enjoying the sun, and having a good time, while fall preps you into busy body mode. With school starting (for you or your little ones) there comes a bus load of after school activities, sports, etc. Many of you out there have more than your own life to keep track of, whether it’s your kids, spouse, or any other relative you can think of. You’re always busy trying to balance out everyone’s lives.

With you keeping track of everything that’s going on; what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Being busy requires convenience, but don’t let stopping at your nearest fast food place become habitual. But who am I to make your daily decisions? All I can do is try to steer you away from fast food, especially these:

According to the book “Eat This! Not that!” author David Zinczenko states the following:

1. The worst of the worst, is the Tuna Melt sandwich COMBO from Quiznos Subs which is nearly equivalent to 1,900 calories! Almost your recommended daily caloric intake…Now doesn’t this say something…?

2. Sorry everyone, you may not want to continue reading…as I’m sure your hoping that your favorites don’t make this list…Standing at #2 is your TRIPLE Baconator meal from Wendy’s. The 3 patty, 3 slices of cheese, and 9 strips of bacon galore is a whopping 1,850 calories-Hey, at least this includes your Coke and fries, right?

3. Your famous triple Whopper with cheese from Burger King made it into the top 3. Scoring at approximately 1,800 calories-Here’s your value meal! You’re really getting what you paid for!

4. Next up is Mcdonald’s big breakfast platter, serving you a platter of 1,370 calories and just about 65 grams of fat. Yummy!

Now we’re not saying that fast food is incredibly horrific. We’re just saying, if you’re going to go with fast food, the next best thing you can do for your body is making better choices. Do you really need that packed with fat, Tuna Melt? Plus, why not save yourself a few bucks? Every dollar counts, especially now We’re truly passionate about your health, if we weren’t, what would our reasoning be in scaring you away from your favorites?

Your health decisions today, will impact you later on. Stay tuned everyone!

8/9/2010     Natural Stress Relievers

We’re all busy people. We live in a high-paced, fast-moving society and we basically live on the go. But when we can’t be in two places at once, how do we manage that overwhelming feeling? What are some ways we can reduce our stress levels without loading ourselves up on supplements, drugs, or trying to release that stress in negative ways; like smoking, drinking, or binge eating.

1. Try to keep your hormones in check. If your hormones are off the walls, your emotions are going to be too. If you’re feeling moody, don’t lash out, but do something relaxing to help stabilize your hormones.

2. In relation to number 1, EXERCISE. Exercise releases many hormones, endorphins, etc. You’ll feel refreshed, and it’s good for you.

3. Eat well-Like the domino effect, if you’re going to eat fast food every day, it’s going to slow down your metabolism, which in turns makes you feeling sluggish, and if you’re feeling sluggish with a big To-Do list, you’re probably not going to be a very happy person.

4. Just say NO-You probably enough stuff to do today, don’t overwhelm yourself with adding one more task. If you don’t have the time, you simply don’t have the time. People will understand, or so we hope anyways.

5. Your environment-if you’re overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out, the last thing you need is loud, obnoxious behavior surrounding you. Even if you have a busy work day, put some classical music on, take a second, clear your head, and just breathe. Breathing exercises throughout your day (especially if you suffer from anxiety) will help you manage your stress levels.

With the new school/fall season starting shortly here, we want our readers to be able to handle things they may encounter during this time in smart, efficient, and good-for-you ways.

If you’re someone who’s tried all of these, and no luck, we do carry natural supplements that are known for managing stress and anxiety levels.

Stress-x by Trace Minerals Research has been one of our top sellers for this particular reason.

We also carry many homeopathic remedies, King Bio, one of our newest manufacturers has a wonderful selection to choose from.

8/9/2010     Back To School Immune Boosters!

We all know that there are certain seasons dedicated to certain illnesses, flu-season, cold season, allergy season, etc. The key to fighting off all of these germs, especially when those close to you are already sick, is taking care of yourself, and having a great immune system. Now, there’s no such thing as being “blessed” with having great immunity. You earn that by taking proper care of your body-eating right, getting all of the nutrients you can, staying away from smoking, drinking, and whatever else may slow your internal system down.

Supplements definitely do give you that boost, but they aren’t there to replace lifestyle changes. If you’re going to supplement your body with some Vitamin C, it’s NOT ok to go ahead and still eat fast food every day. Supplements are complements, they complement your lifestyle, your diet, and are to help improve quality of life.

According to research, these are the top ten most common supplements to an immune boost.

Echinacea: It helps stimulate the production of white blood cells, which are your cells that take action when a cold is coming along.

Garlic: Known for supporting cardiovascular, and heart disease.

Vitamin A: Eye, aging, and also is known for fighting against cancer components.

Vitamin B: Targets the nervous system. This is key to high immunity, because if you’re nervous system isn’t working to its full potential, its unable to send the correct messages to get your body protecting itself.

Vitamin C
: Produces the immunologic protein-the more you produce the more proteins you will have to fight off bacteria.

Vitamin E: The powerhouse of Antioxidants, which do a little bit of everything, from fighting off cancer, repairing nerves, or destroying free radicals.

CoEnzyme Q10: Supports and stimulates cell energy and circulation.

Glutamine: an amino acid that helps feed your cells so that they’re strong enough to take on viruses and bacteria, and infections.

Zinc: A high antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals, and helps your body absorb and manufacture other key vitamins.

Now, we aren’t suggesting that you take on these supplements all at once, just because you feel a cold is coming on. Know your body, and know your body’s needs, supplement with what you think your body is missing. If you think your kids need some Vitamin C, make sure they’re drinking all of their orange juice, and maybe treat them to some Electrolyte Stamina paks (which is LOADED with Vitamin C, but they don’t need to know that.)

Our goal is to provide supplements at a wonderful rate for every family. Each family is different, and has their own specific needs, and we want to accommodate those needs the best we can.

3/22/2010     Coping with Rosacea, Psoriasis, and Eczema

Coping with Rosacea, Psoriasis, and Eczema

Rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema; three words sufferers hate to hear. Skin problems are sometimes genetic, that is some people are genetically predisposed to be more likely to get them. However, even so, that doesn’t mean they will. These conditions can be brought about by many factors, here are just a few:

Stress: New stress or chronic stress both raise levels of hormones which make allergies flare and the immune system go on over drive. Sometimes, just reducing stress in our lives can make these conditions lessen or go away. Most find that once they appear, it’s a long road to recovery.

New location, house, or job: Sometimes living in a new place, whether it’s work, school or a new home, can expose us to new germs and allergens which can cause the flare ups. Learn to reduce inflammation and allergens by watching and changing your diet.

New Foods: Sometimes new foods, spicy foods, or food ingredients can trigger episodes, try checking your diet for common allergens.

Change of Life: Fluctuating hormones (in both men and women) due to entering puberty, or middle age can cause flare ups which may last for years. Think menopause is just for women? New studies suggest that men go through a change of life too, similar to menopause. As adrenal systems and sex hormones fluctuate as their body ages, so does some ailments such as skin disorders.

What can be done about these uncomfortable skin disorders? While we don't promise an overnight cure, these remedies were a result of asking those in the know, men and women who suffer from them and natural health specialists. Try one, try a few, or try all, see which one works for you.

-Omega-3 fatty acids: These act like antioxidants in the body, capturing free radicals, toxins, and allergens. Researchers have reported that a diet high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3 fatty acids may make a person more prone to immune system disorders and allergic reactions. They recommend a ratio of 6 to one, that is a diet rich in omega-3 and low in omega-6. Tip the scales with a simple tasty supplement.

-Anti-inflammatory diet: What is it? The anti-inflammatory diet is one rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those with dark colors such as leafy greens and deep purple berries. It also contains omega-3 rich fish and nuts (though not if you have a nut allergy.) It is also very low in processed, over cooked, and packaged foods.

-Vitamin-C: We cannot stress enough the importance of this nutrient. Be sure to take at least 500mg of bioflavonoid rich vitamin-C daily. Be sure to get one made with rose hips, acerola cherries and other fruits and vegetables and avoid plain ascorbic acid products. In order for the vitamin-C to be useful, it has to have the bioflavonoids, which are enzymes, to process the vitamin-C, or else it will just make matters worse.

-Antioxidants: A diet rich in antioxidants, dark leafy greens, dark berries, quercetin, and turmeric is recommended. These have anti-inflammatory properties and studies suggest they may reduce immune response, even helping correct the over active immune systems which cause the flare ups.

-Avoid These: If you suspect you may have an allergy to something, avoid it. Simply eliminate suspected foods, detergents, perfumes, and body products to see if any may be making the problem worse. Some say spicy food helps, but for most plants from the nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants) make symptoms worse. -Glycerin: This helps pull moisture to the skin. Use a glycerin based soap instead of one with sodium tallowate or sodium laurel sulfate and avoid scented soaps. Same goes for lotion products. Also avoid petroleum products as they may make matters worse.

-Mud Baths: Soaking in a bath with bentonite clay may feel cooling and soothing and help during painful episodes. Using mud packs made from Moroccan red clay, green clay, or bentonite clay may also help drag toxins and allergens from the skin, providing temporary relief.

-Sesame oil: This is a relatively new idea. Pure, untoasted sesame oil has been found to reduce swelling, itching, and pain as well as reduce the size of the lesions and affected areas. Researchers and natural therapists are now recommending those affected to try pure raw sesame oil for its purported anti-inflammatory and immunomodulary effects, simply massage onto the affected areas at least once per day.

-40% zinc oxide cream: Zinc oxide was once a panacea cure all, it does work for some. It is used to prevent sunburns, but it may also be effective in psoriasis and eczema. Also, try adding a zinc supplement to the diet, zinc does have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulary properties which may help ease the condition.

-Herbs: Such as burdock, yellow dock, sarsaparilla, oregon grape complex, and nettle are just a few of the herbs suggested by naturopaths. Although you may want to seek a private consultation. Certified naturopaths may not be covered under insurance, but the cost is usually the same as insurance co-pays. They can test you and see which herbal complexes works best.

Coping with rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis doesn’t have to be a chore or painful, these tips have helps sufferers like yourself live with less pain and embarrassment. These tips have proved to ease and sometimes reduce lesions and symptoms as well as lessen pain and discomfort.
