OPINIONS BY COCO MARCH N.D.

We often hear some many contradictory views on which flax is best we don’t know who to believe. I have personally used Northern Edge milled flax for breakfast since I moved from Europe to the States. Many use Omega-3 oils in a gel form but they miss that Omegas are better absorbed by the body in the presence of their natural protein found in the flax seeds, when you use cold milled flax seed non of the oils are lost and you also obtain the rich fiber the seeds of flax provide.

Randolph & James Flax Mills is a family owned company from Canada I have had the opportunity to meet James Boschman and his partners and I can testify that they put their clients first. They work from a State of the Art Milling Facility to ensure that you get the best and nothing else.

I like to mix 2 or 3 Tablespoons of Northern Edge cold milled flax with my Greens and protein powder each morning. I guarantee you that if you have either constipation or diarrhea problems they will be taken care of after using the following recipe each morning:

-         5 Tabs of Almased protein powder

-         1 scoop of Nectar Naturals Protein Powder (scoop comes in canister)

-         1 scoop of Delicious Greens 8000 Berry flavor or Original

-         2 Tabs of NorthernEdge Milled Flax Seed

Mix it all in a food processor or just with a spoon in a glass of water, milk or juice. I have one of those Vita-Mix blenders. I use only water with the recipe above, to me it tastes very good and I get every thing your body needs. Protein, High quality carbohydrates (from the greens) and excellent fat, if you have this for breakfast you will feel more focus and will not be hungry for many hours.

If you are trying to loose weight use this shake for breakfast it will help you like you won't believe, the glycemic index is very low (mixed in water) and the calories are essential to nourish your body systems in the morning.

This is also a great day starter for children. Kids with ADD and ADHD will benefit from removing all sugars from their diet and beginning the day with a healthy shake such as the one I make for myself. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions drmarch@nokomisnutrition.com

Hope this helps you,

Coco March, N.D.

BROWN FLAX SEEDS, OR GOLDEN?

Which color of flax seed should you buy? Some ads suggest golden flax seeds are more nutritious than brown ones, but the brown seed taste and look good. Nutritional comparisons indicate you should be wary of over-exuberant claims from a particular U.S. supplier that golden flax is superior to brown flax.

On the North American prairies, thousands of acres of prime growing land produce flax plants with either brown or yellow flax seeds. In Canada, which is the world leader in flax production, almost all flax seeds produced are reddish brown. In the United States, and in South Dakota in particular, a golden-seed flax, called "Dakota Gold", is popular.

Is flax seed of one color better for you than the other? A recent comparison of "Dakota Gold" flax with Canadian brown-seed flax shows golden and brown seeds are very closely matched in oil content (on a dry-matter basis). The analysis conducted on two "Dakota Gold" flax seed samples by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) showed the golden seed contained between 43 and 44 per cent oil. This compared with the 44 per cent oil of Canadian brown flax seed found in the July 2001 CGC analysis. However, the brown seed surpassed the "Dakota Gold" in the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic component of that oil. The July 2001 brown flax seed samples contained almost 59 per cent omega-3 fatty acid compared to about 51 percent in the "Dakota Gold" samples. Thus, the evidence points to nutritional equality of brown and golden flax.

Superior oil quality and higher oil content have long been major features of Canadian flaxseed, attributed to Canada's climate. These qualities have contributed largely to Canada's current position as the world's leader in flax production and quality.
