Keeps the Doctor Away
There is an old adage that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Previously, the only research to prove this theory was the fact that apples contain high amounts of vitamin-C, but recently, researchers have found astounding properties and even admit that the apple may still carry secrets.
While the common apple does have large amounts of vitamin-C, and complex carbohydrates, it also has a wide array of other nutritional qualities such as antioxidants, minerals, bioflavonoids and insoluble fiber. However, none of these have the researchers so astounded as the pectin apples contain.
Once, only used as a thickener for jams and jellies, pectin was once used simply as a jelling agent. Now, thanks to research, pectin is getting a second look. Nutritional scientists have found that the evidence all points to pectin's amazing abilities to lower cholesterol levels. Apple's pectin, a soluble fiber, goes to work in the body and provides many benefits. The richest sources of pectin are from the Jongold varieties.
Researchers in the United Kingdom have concluded that a diet rich in animal meats and fat and low in carbohydrate leads to high cholesterol and other diseases. However, the mighty apple is powerful enough to counteract all of them.
Researchers in Japan discovered that pectin from apples can decrease colon cancer. The dietary fiber in apples is essential in maintaining good digestive health, the researchers at the University of California UC Davis have concluded. Around the world, scientists and researchers have concluded that eating an apple a day is helpful in maintaining and building good health.
How do They Work?
Apples contain pectin, an antioxidant which fights the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream. It also attaches itself to fats released by the liver and gall bladder and assist in their safe removal from the body. At least 90% of the cholesterol in our bodies is manufactured by the body, the rest comes from our diet. While eating fatty and cholesterol-laden rich foods can have an impact on total cholesterol levels, it is the cholesterol our own body makes which gets us into trouble. This cholesterol is often the LDL or bad kind, a leftover from metabolic processes.
Cholesterol has some good points, in the colon it is consumed by gut friendly bacteria and turned into essential nutrients. However, too much of the cholesterol slips by and is absorbed by the intestinal walls. This is where pectin comes in, it binds with the LDL cholesterol and other fats in the digestive tract and causes them to be harmlessly eliminated.
Further, pectin gets absorbed by the blood stream and once inside, it does double duty, scooping up more LDL cholesterol and free radicals and takes them to be eliminated, too.
Colon Cancer Fighter
Apple pectin increases the activity of the large intestine with both its soluble and insoluble fibers. It increases the acidity of the intestines, making it more favorable to beneficial bacteria and a hostile environment for bad bacteria. Apple pectin is also a general intestinal regulator and has been used for centuries in medicinal preparations as an anti-diarrhea agent. Doctors advocate apple's properties for treating stomach and intestinal disorders, especially for those suffering from ulcers, ulcerative colitis, and other grave diseases.
Diabetics may also have a good reason to eat raw apples or drink apple juice and consume other forms of apple pectin. There is increasing evidence that regular use of apple pectin may lessen the severity of diabetes. Evidence also links apple pectin fiber to prevent regression in gallstones and for regulating blood pressure.
We should all begin healthy habits such as eating an apple a day. Children should be provided with the opportunity to make an apple a day a habit and us older adults can begin to form this healthy habit in our lives. We shouldn't wait until old age or illness robs us of the fun we have in life. Many people may be surprised to find out apple pectin is just one of the food extracts which makes the Delicious Greens 8000 product revered by health seeking individuals around the world!
