Just a Drop
Back in the 1950s, researchers realized that orange juice was too strong for children and babies and decided that apple juice was less acidic and therefore a better choice. The problem was, apple juice doesn't contain as much vitamin-C as orange juice. So they went to work to find a solution to this problem.
See, vitamin-C is an essential nutrient for the body. Human's are one of the very few species that cannot manufacture their own vitamin-C. Since it is needed for several metabolic processes and to assist the immune system, vitamin-C deficiency can cause severe ailments and diseases, such as scurvy and metabolic disorders. It is in fact, essential for life-sustaining energy. And children are the most susceptible to having a deficiency of it.
The Crepe Myrtle Berry
Also called the Acerola cherry or Barbadoes cherry, this fruit has the color and texture of an apple. However, unlike apples, it packs a punch of vitamin-C. A detailed analysis found that Acerola juice contains 32 times the amount of an equal sample of orange juice. A similar test was carried out and proved that Acerola berries contain the most vitamin-C of all domesticated fruits.
While vitamin-C supplements are popular, they are not actually good for us. The reason is that they are usually made from industrial sources of ascorbic acid, a caustic and indigestible form of vitamin-C, which is better left to cleaning products. However, the vitamin-C found in rose hips and Acerola cherries contains powerful antioxidants and enzymes called bioflavonoids. These buffer the vitamin-C and assist the body in absorbing AND utilizing it to the full. Therefore, a single dose of 500mg of ascorbic acid is not as potent as a single dose of 500mg of bioflavonoid rich vitamin-C.
Further, the antioxidant profile of Acerola cherries is undergoing research for its demonstration of powerful anti-cancer properties. The polyphenol antioxidants it contains are a group of naturally occurring antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, which has been making headlines in the scientific communities for its ability to fight cancer and the effect of aging.
Researchers have published many articles on the other health benefits this cherry may contain such as promoting a healthy immune system, preventing colds and infections, fighting hairloss, fighting tooth decay, reversing and eliminating symptoms of chronic fatigue, reducing and preventing bleeding and hemorraging, and fighting premature aging.
Its Native Lands
The Acerola cherry is native to the West Indies, Central and North America. However, it's not as common in the United States as orange juice, but it is a household name in many southern countries. It's bright red and green fruits are a bit larger than cherries and have a pleasant mild taste. It has been used for many centuries by native peoples for treating diseases and fighting colds and infections. In colonial times, it was often used to make jellies and jams. It was often used alone, or with the addition of berries.
