Skin Care pt 1: TLC for Your Face
There are a few companies on the market which recognize the dangers of the chemicals used in commercial products. Many of them can be found at local health food stores with high end price tags. In today's economy who can afford to purchase natural and plant based products at the prices they sell for?
Another common problem is that many people do not have the time nor the desire to research the ingredients in the products they buy or want to buy to find out if they are safe for the skin. While many more simply do not want to take the chance of causing skin cancer from a chemical found in a product.
With the skyrocketing prices, lack of time, and fear of hidden dangers you may wonder, what can I get that is at a reasonable price which will do my skin some good and not contain harsh chemicals or dry out my skin?
NOW® brand has decided to fill this need. In addition to their inexpensive line of top quality herbal supplements and organic foods, they also produce good quality skin care at affordable prices. Unlike many other low cost brands on the market, they do not use cheap fillers and small amounts of botanical extracts. Instead, their skin care products are based mostly on plant ingredients which have been scientifically proven to provide direct benefits to the skin.
For the Face they Have a Delicious Pomegranate and Green Tea set.
These four products contain ingredients such as:
Vegetable Glycerin; a moisture balancing product.
Sweet Almond Oil; gentle moisturizer used for thousands of years in the Mediterranean and Orient for its beautifying and moisturizing properties.
Grape seed oil contains naturally occurring fatty acids and is an effective moisturizer and skin plumper.
Borage oil; this oil derived from a seed, assists in skin balance, it also is absorbed into the skin and can help balance hormones in both men and women. Hormonal balance is essential in aiding the body in keeping the skin balanced, not oily or dry.
Rosewood & Green Tea essence; rosewood has been used in the Orient and Europe for a few decades and was even mentioned in ancient medical texts for its benefits in skin care. Green tea is considered the beauty and longevity secret of Japan.
Natural vitamin-E has been used effectively to repair damaged skin. It effectiveness is well known and promoted as part of burn unit treatments, reversing eye damage (when dropped into the eye), reducing scars, stretch marks, blemishes, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Vitamin-A is currently under research for its apparent age-defying properties and abilities.
Pomegranate has scientists excited as pomegranate juice applied topically has reversed and stopped skin cancers in controlled and double blind studies.
Algae extract is both an age reversal and sun care protectant. Our ancestors used it to prevent sun damage, scarring, and sunburns. In addition to its fatty acid and protein content, the chlorophyll found in tiny aquatic plants is more effective at reversing skin damage than plants grown on land.
Aloe Vera has long been used around the globe for hundreds of years. In addition to containing vitamin-C, it also contains collagen strengthening components. Researchers say that it may actually induce the skin to form collagen and elastin while reducing the effects of radiation (UV Rays) and increasing healing.
Chamomile and calendula have been used in Europe for their skin soothing and calming properties. Calendula is currently being researched for its possible ability to reverse skin damage and reduce healing time.
Cucumber is considered a cooling skin relief. The internal temperature of the cucumber is 10 to 20 degrees colder than the temperature of its surroundings. Scientists attribute this to special phytochemicals it contains. This same effect is also why cucumbers are often used to reduce puffiness around the eyes.
Rosemary has long been revered in the Mediterranean for its medicinal properties. It is a natural antioxidant, preservative, and also seems to assist in balancing the skin.
Pycnogenol® and CoQ10 are also added for their anti-aging and skin firming properties.
Other ingredients include natural witch-hazel (an astringent and skin toner), lavender (calming and balancing to the skin as well as an effective preservative), nettle leaf extract (reduces skin allergies), arnica, xanthan gum (provides moisture and thickens the product), shea nut butter (used in African and Europe to promote healthy skin), cedar bark (natural preservative).
Why You Need to Pay Attention to Your Face
Our face is what we show the world. It is what people use to easily recognize us from each other. More often than not, people recognize one another by our faces, not our names. Having clean and healthy skin can go a long way towards making a good first impression. Additionally, a clean and well cared for face can boost our confidence and help us feel better about ourselves.
Some people find it difficult to wrap their minds around using a lot of products on their face. They think it will take too much time to care for the face everyday. Truthfully, it takes about 5 minutes to brush our teeth, but only 2 to 3 minutes to wash our face and apply a product.
Just three steps are all that’s needed to promote clean healthy skin, fight aging, and reduce blemishes and scarring. All we really need is a facial cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Older or more sun damaged skin might need a little more TLC (tender loving care) and we will cover more about that in another newsletter this month.
What You Need for Good Skin Care Is:
~ A towel only you use. Do not use the towel you use when you shower and avoid the one used to dry your hands with every time you leave the bathroom. These contain lots of bacteria which can cause infections. Instead, use a clean washcloth or hand towel to wash and dry your face every time.
~ Pomegranite Facial Cleanser. This is a product made specifically for the face. Hand soap, especially the antibacterial kind, can contain harsh chemicals which can cause drying and promote aging and cancer. Use a product especially formulated for the face.
~ Pomegranite Facial Toner. Many people think they can avoid skin toner, after washing the face of the daily grit and grime, the skin is bare, its acid mantel (the delicate acid balance which fights infections) is gone, in its place are all the dangerous chemicals and chlorines found in municipal tap water. Toner helps wipe that last bit of dirt and the harsh chemicals found in city water off the face and replaces it with an acid mantle.
~ Face cream. It's important to apply a face cream as these contain ingredients which help heal sun damage, replenish moisture, reverse signs of aging, and help the skin look its best. They usually come in two types: day cream and night cream. Pomegranite Moisturizing Day Cream usually lighter and contains ingredients which thwart sun damage. Pomegranite Moisturizing Night Cream provides more moisture and, since the skin opens and is more actively repairing itself, it usually contains more ingredients to help it do so.
Caring For your Face – 3-Steps
Caring for your face takes as little as 3 minutes twice per day. It's as simple as applying a small amount of cleanser on a wet face and massaging it for about 30 seconds. Then, after completely rinsing the face and drying it, apply a toner to a cotton pad or ball and sweep across the face in swirling motions to rebalance it. Third, apply the face cream for night or day and massage it in with upward sweeping motions. That’s it, perform twice per day and in just 6 to 10 minutes per day, you will notice a difference usually in the first week.
